Sun Trajectory

A sun trajectory diagram was made for November 26, 2012 for Macon Georgia.  The diagram shown below depicts the location of the sun throughout the day.

The following source was used to find the exact time of day of sunrise and sunset.

Hurricane Hugo

Hurricane Hugo was a Cape Verde Islands hurricane, which developed in the Atlantic off the west coast of Africa on September 9, 1989. Hugo caused widespread damage and many deaths in the Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico and South Carolina.

As I stated in my first blog post I am from Isle of Palms, SC where the worst damage occurred. Shortly after Midnight on September 22, 1989, the center of the category 4 hurricane made landfall on Isle of Palms in South Carolina.  Maximum winds of 137 mph were recorded at Charleston Naval Air Station, 108 mph at Downtown Charleston and 98 mph at the Charleston airport.

This is the damage that occurred on the Isle of Palms.

Barometer Lab

A barometer is a meteorological instrument used to measure the atmospheric pressure or barometric pressure.  A typical mercury barometer, shown in the picture below, consists of a glass tube open on one end and closed on the other.  The tube is filled with liquid mercury and placed upside down in a container which also contains mercury.  As the atmospheric pressure changes the mercury level in the glass tube will rise or fall to show the pressure of the air pushing down on the mercury in the container.  A standardized scale is placed on the glass tube in the units of inches of mercury.

Here is a Video that shows you how to make a home made barometer using a glass jar, balloon and straw.

Maps

Wars of nations are fought to change maps. But wars of poverty are fought to map change.

Choropleth Map of the US Water Withdraws in MGD

A Choropleth map shows the level of variability within a region through different colors of shading.  This map depicts water withdrawals in million gallons per day for each state through a progression of the color blue, with the darkest color representing the largest water withdrawals.  Based on this map you are able to conclude that Florida, California and Texas withdrawal the most amount of water per day.

Dot Density Map of Commercial Wireless Antennas in the US

A Dot Density Map uses scattered dots of the same size to provide a representation of density.  This map depicts the amount of Commercial Wireless Antennas in the US.  Through this map you are able to see the difference of commercialization in various regions of the US. This shows how much more the eastern half of the US is developed compared to the western.

Proportional Symbol Map of Total Murders Per State in 2009

A Proportional Symbol Map alters the size of the chosen symbol to represent the data.  The bigger the symbol appears the larger the number represented in the data.  This map depicts the number of murders per state in the US in the year 2009.  It shows that California, Texas, and Florida had the most murders in the year 2009.

Isopleth Map: Topographic Map of Mt. Kenya

A Topographic Map is a type of Isopleth map which uses contouring lines to represent elevation.  This map represents the changes in elevation of Mt Kenya.

Breathtaking!

Environmental Sensitivity Map of the Block Island Sound

Environmental Sensitivity Maps have been used for planning and monitoring certain areas.  An Environmental Sensitivity Map is generally used for a coastal or water areas and documents where various species of animals live within that area.  This map is of the Rhode Island coast in the Block Island Sound.

Hurricane Hugo 1989

Im from Charleston, SC well actually the Isle of Palms and I've been through many smaller Hurricanes but im thankful I did not have to go through this one.  I have grown up hearing stories about how horrible it was because my parents did not evacuate, thinking it was not going to be bad.  Up till Katrina occurred this was the Hurricane that had caused the most dammage.
